Prayer to be free of too much structure

You might be a creature of habit, but are you free? Or has your vision of the world become hard and inflexible? We depend on structures for context, but every human-made design has limitations.

Be careful when you catch yourself thinking or saying:

  • That’s how it’s always been done.
  • That’s just how I am.

While traditions have value, if they crush creativity or caring, there’s something wrong. Also, don’t misinterpret the phrase, “God understands me.” If you use this as an excuse to hurt yourself or others, God certainly wants you to change.

We shouldn’t throw all structures out the window, but remember why they exist – to serve us, not the other way around.

If you find yourself in a spiritual rut, you might try participating in a retreat, Bible study, or some kind of volunteer/church service. Also, intensify your prayer efforts. Ask God to help you open up your conversation with him. It’s important to spend time examining your attitudes, especially towards those closest to you.

Don’t let your faith get stale. Keep it alive and be renewed. Make this  a priority in your life and see how the heavens open up to you.

Romans 12:2

For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice,
the knowledge of God, rather than burnt offerings.

Hosea 6:6

Then again he laid his hands upon his eyes; and he looked intently and was restored, and saw everything clearly.

Mark 8:25

Oh blessed Lord,

I know you desire order and responsibility from me. Chaos is not your plan.

Still, oh Lord, keep me close. Free me from dead structures where I count on old ways or rituals instead of resting in you. Free me from anything that imprisons me… or others.

Awaken in me new ways, an authentic faith in Christ.

Help me to understand you desire a change of heart, not sacrifice.

Your Kingdom is not of this world. Let me see past doubts and fears.

You elevate the humble, the outcast. You wash clean the forgotten. May your Spirit fill me and open my eyes again to the Good News.

Jesus nailed to the cross for me then raised up in glory. Christ alone is sufficient, and in him I find meaning.

Let me be free, joyful and quick to love, serve and give. Renew me in the freedom of knowing Jesus as Lord.

Prayer for God’s will in my life

God did not make us robots. Instead, he lets us choose. At the same time, he is deeply concerned about our growth and our relationship with his son, Jesus. So why does it seem so hard to understand God’s will sometimes?

One of the reasons is that our vision may be clouded by harmful attitudes. Things like pride, anger, manipulation and vanity block our view. But that’s also part of God’s will. He wants us to be free of sin and selfishness, then he has something to work with. It’s like giving someone the keys to your car – you only do it if they are clear headed.

To make it easier to know the will of God, start with the basics, that is, faith in the Gospel message. Upon that eternal truth, all other plans unfold. When you stand upon the truth of the crucified and resurrected Christ, the heavens open up, and the Word of God comes to you.

So stand firm in your faith. If you don’t feel confident about it, get on your knees and ask for this grace. Our good and loving God will not refuse you. Then, by a similar process, seek his will for your life.

John 6:40

And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who possess the Spirit. The unspiritual man does not receive the gifts of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual man judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. “For who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

1 Corinthians 2:13-16

Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me; when you seek me with all your heart,

Jeremiah 29:12-13

Oh heavenly Lord,

I’m at a crossroads. I have decisions to make, and I’m unsure. Many voices shout out telling me, “Do this. Do that!” Confusion and doubt are everywhere.

So I go to your presence, and I seek your holy will. Give me clarity, oh Lord.

Reveal to me your plan. Remove my fears and desires. Give me a clean, honest heart so I can open up completely to receive your Spirit and Word.

Show me, oh Lord, that it all begins with belief. Belief that God came as man to die for my sins. Belief in the Resurrection, as your Spirit gives life, and God is love.

From this eternal truth let my search for direction begin. Send me your Word, oh Lord, and in your will may I get closer to you.

Prayer to be free of resentment

When anger becomes distorted and rotten, it transforms into resentment. This happens when we take an old wound and blame it on something bothering us now.

Everybody gets angry sometimes, and there are healthy ways to channel anger. If it drives you to seek good and justice, then it’s positive. If it makes you feel like hurting someone, then something is wrong. If left to linger too long, you can even begin to feel resentment when you see blessings happen. It’s as if life is unfair only to you.

If you notice yourself feeling hate and disgust for someone, check your heart. Is your reaction appropriate? Is it in line with your values and convictions? Does it reflect your faith in a loving Savior?

Go to God when you feel resentment. Be sincere with yourself and with the Lord. Let him show you what’s going on inside your heart. And then let him reveal to you the doorway to freedom.

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

Matthew 7:3-5

Jesus then said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

John 8:31-32

Oh loving Lord,

If I see wrong or don’t agree, I get angry sometimes or even seethe with rage.

Why does this happen? Why am I so resentful? Won’t you help me?

Forgive me, oh Lord, for hurting and condemning even if just in my heart. I look at the sin of others while a plank blinds my own eye.

Show me, oh Lord, the root of my reaction, my hate. Show me where it all began and free me from that hurt. Heal my history and my heart.

Help me to forgive.

Cast out any spirit that tempts me to look upon others with hate instead of compassion. I have no right, oh Lord, for I am a sinner too.

Let your mercy guide me, and may the joy of my salvation be my message to all.

For you alone are holy, you alone are the Lord.

Prayer for when you need to bounce back

Have you hit a rough patch in your life? Maybe you had a big setback or got knocked down. Or perhaps you’re just worn out from the fight. Remember, this is not the last chapter in your life.

Don’t look for easy answers. Instead, take advantage of this time to reaffirm your relationship with God. This builds your character. As your faith deepens and grows, you are more solid and secure. And those who are strong in Christ are a blessing to others.

So don’t let the current moment define you. Reach out to God. Let him put you back on your feet. You’ll be wiser and more mature. Trust in the Lord and believe!

The line of resistance is real. The enemy tempts me to shut down, give in and forget. Cast out his lies, oh Lord. Only you have the words of eternal life.

Help me dig down and break through. Deepen my trust in you. I can only ask for this grace, as on my own I am lost.

Show my heart, once again, that I am your child, my identity eternal, my soul at rest.

Prayer for when you feel worthless

Feeling worthless happens to nearly everyone at some point. The hard part is if you feel this way often. A lot of it depends on your personal history. You may have been criticized or ignored. Or you might have had trouble realizing your dreams.

Regardless of your history, nobody is worthless. People and circumstances do not determine your worth as a human. Don’t let another person’s weakness bring you down. Rise above this. Every life has value. This was established forever by God as his creation is good. But there’s more.

You are so important to God, that he gave up his Son for you.

You may have heard this many times before, but stop and think about it again. God’s Son. His most beloved. Faithful and pure. Given up for you. That’s all the proof your heart and soul need. So listen, believe and be restored.

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16

We love, because he first loved us.

1 John 4:19

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[b] neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:38-39

Oh loving Lord,

I feel like all hope is lost. Where is the meaning in my life? I feel so worthless.

If there’s any chance for me it’s here, now, in your presence.

Help me, oh Lord, to remember, even though I heard the story many times. Tell it again to my heart. That a Savior came. A good man. A faithful man. He came for me to know that God loves me.

Giving up his place of purity and power, Jesus took my place on the cross. God loves me so much that he gave his only Son.

Reveal to my heart, oh Lord, the depth of his loving sacrifice. Pure innocence given up for me. Free me from the lie, oh Lord, that my life has no purpose.

Just being alive glorifies you, ror I am your creation.

May I embrace the truth that the hand of God makes my life possible.

And the Son of Man makes my soul free.

Prayer for spiritual healing

Any time we get hurt, it can lead to a spiritual wound. This happens deep inside you and can affect almost any aspect of your life. In most cases, it begins with an emotional event such as loss, betrayal, abuse or negligence.

A very common reaction is to ignore the wound or try kill the pain with things that hurt you even more.

Spiritual wounds might be hard to identify. They may show up as anxiety or harmful attitudes and habits. You might feel sad, angry or unsatisfied with life. You might be over controlling. In prayer, God will show you the origin of these problems which is part of the healing process.

It’s okay to ask the right people for help, but complete healing of spiritual wounds can only come from the hand of Christ. If there is sin involved, repentance and restoration are essential.  A spiritual guide can be a great help. Above all, trust in God to lead you through this process.

The fruit of healing is more confidence in the Lord. Plus, you may be able to accompany someone else on their healing journey. Nothing of God’s grace goes to waste.

You know my entire story. Only you fully understand my wounds and my hurt. Even when I hurt myself.

Only you can truly heal me. Won’t you help me, oh Lord? Show me how to open up and let you into where I hurt and bleed the most.

May I trust in Christ Jesus to care for my deepest wounds, The ones I want to forget about, the ones that hold me back. Those wounds I now surrender to your loving care.

Immerse me in your mercy. Pour out your Holy Spirit to heal and cleanse me. There is no other way, no other hope for me. Only you can restore this tired soul.

Prayer for a break from the struggle

Are you overwhelmed? Need a break?

In some situations, it might seem like there is no relief in sight.

There is only one place you can go and find true rest, guaranteed. In the Lord’s presence, your soul receives the fresh water it needs. If you count on yourself, other people or circumstances to give you rest, you’ll eventually be disappointed.

Instead, find your true rest in Jesus. Yes, you can ask for things to change. But don’t depend on the exterior to calm your heart. In any situation, your soul can rest in the peace that Christ gives.

Go to him and get refreshed. Find true rest in the Lord.

Psalm 23:1-3

Even if it’s just more of you giving strength to my weary soul.

Here, now, I rest in you as you are my hope and salvation.

Yes, Lord, I know I can ask for you to change things, but if I must change first, help me.

I can’t do it alone.

You are the Almighty Lord, Creator of heaven and earth. I bow down to your will and invoke your Holy Spirit to take control of my life.

Give me courage and patience. Let your mercy be my guide. Give me peace in Christ.

Prayer for spiritual renewal

Has your relationship with God gone stale? Just like any relationship with a person, the same old routine isn’t always best. Yes, you need stability and consistency, but you also need freshness and life. A relationship with Jesus doesn’t have to be a spectacle, but it should not be boring either.

In every case, a healthy relationship with our Lord means growth. You’ll never get to perfection, but you improve. You never fully understand God’s ways, but your trust in him grows.

Look for ways to revive your spirit. Make a conscious effort. Seek God and his will more intensely. Go deeper and let him solidify your faith. Let the Lord make your joy more complete. Then watch your capacity to love grow.

Not to throw away past lessons, but for your Spirit to rebuild and breathe new life into my faith.

Show me how to do this. Let me open myself completely to your voice; the voice that tells me God is love and in Christ all things are new.

Renew me, restore me, break me down if needed, then, let me fall in love again, oh Lord, trusting in your promises. Now a bit more mature and solid in the ways of the Master but still with so much to learn.

Let my joy be a deeper joy, one that celebrates and gives thanks.

Let my love be a deeper love, one that receives and gives life.

May it all start and end with my Lord, my God, my Savior Jesus Christ,

Prayer to trust more in God’s Spirit

When you trust someone, you let them see a side of you that others might not see. You share intimate feelings with them, and you respect their opinion. The Holy Spirit is a person. And he is a person you can trust infinitely.

So tell him your story. Talk to the Spirit about your hopes, fears and miseries. Lay it all out. It’s a place where you can let your guard down and express yourself freely. Then listen. Listen to what the Spirit has to say to you, even if it’s a tough truth you need to hear.

As time passes, this relationship with the Holy Spirit grows into a deeper trust. You will realize you have more clarity and courage. You’ll see things from a different perspective you never had. Miracles will unfold before you. Your relationship with the Spirit starts in trust and grows in trust.

Trust the Spirit. Let him in. Let him set you free, heal you and transform you. Then go forth into the world as a faithful servant of God.

Free me from the trap of thinking it all depends on me or my understanding. Instead, let me surrender myself unto you.

Show me how to be humble and open my heart to God. Bring down the obstacles, oh Lord, pour out your Spirit over me, remove my fear and doubt. Allow me to listen and obey.

This cannot happen without you, my Lord, my God.

Form my character to give ample room for your Spirit to work inside me. May your truth and grace take control of my life,

Since I belong to you.

Prayer to protect your heart

Sometimes we think protecting our hearts means avoiding pain. But in the end, isolation does more harm than good. It’s normal to want to avoid pain, but the strong heart accepts and understands the meaning of suffering.

This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a defense. And the best protection is a close relationship with Jesus. He heals you and sets you free. He teaches you the “why” of hurt. It’s not easy, and it may take a long time, but in the end you see things from the perspective of God’s Son. He took all our blame even though he was innocent. Jesus knew that the only way to truly protect his heart from all the pain was to love more.

Pray and protect your heart

So don’t go into this world unprepared. It will either leave you very damaged or cause you to harden your heart. Instead, make a difference. Ask for God’s Spirit to work inside you to give you a strong heart. Get divine protection, and the Good News will flow out and bless those around you.

Philippians 4:7

A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you; and I will take out of your flesh the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.

Ezekiel 36:26

Oh heavenly Lord,

The world suffers and bleeds. It hurts to know and see it. My own failure stings me.

How do I protect my heart, oh Lord? Won’t you show me? A heart of stone never hurts and never bleeds. A heart of stone feels nothing, but this is not what I want.

Give me a loyal heart, oh Lord, a courageous heart, a loving heart. May your Spirit do this for me. Let me not be foolish or afraid. Jesus saw the suffering, but he did not run and hide. Instead he gave his life.

Let me know that in caring and giving my heart becomes stronger. Yes, it will hurt sometimes, but I will be fully alive. Full of the Spirit.

And in all things my heart will rejoice at the glory God.

May it be this way according to your will, oh Lord, according to your way.
