A prayer for when you feel defeated

The feeling of defeat can be devastating. Why? Because it usually means that you put in a lot of effort, and things didn’t turn out how you expected. Or, circumstances out of your control led to a poor outcome.

As much as it hurts, moments of defeat are huge opportunities. Of course you wanted a better result, but that doesn’t mean everything is a disaster. Can you learn from the process? Will your ability to keep going grow stronger?

The enemy wants you to think that there’s no exit. But remember, your defeat does not define who you are.

The resurrection of Christ shows us that even in the darkest moments, new life can appear. It won’t be the same as before, but if we trust the Lord, it can be even better. Jesus won the victory for you. Believe this and know you are a child of God. Let his Spirit restore you. He will never let you go.

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life;[c] he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?

John 11:25-26

Instead of your shame
you will receive a double portion,
and instead of disgrace
you will rejoice in your inheritance.
And so you will inherit a double portion in your land,
and everlasting joy will be yours.

Isaiah 61:7

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

PRAYER FOR WHEN YOU FEEL DEFEATED

O blessed Lord,

I’m down and out; on the floor, beaten. Will I ever get up again?

Do you see me, O Lord?

I give up all my failure and my shame to you. May my wounds be cleansed by the blood of Christ. He alone sets me free.

Let me hear, once again your comforting voice. Soothe my anguish with your loving mercy.

I do not seek an easy way out. Let it be real and lasting, O Lord. Guide me to repent if needed. Restore my soul and let me know that I am much more than the present moment.

In Christ, I can rise again. You make me strong & steady. I lift my head ready to face a new day with confidence.

In my defeat I find victory as it brings me closer to you.

In Jesus name,

Amen.
