Prayer to purify your motives

Why do you do what you do? In your family life, at work – even at church – what motivates your actions? Do you want to control things? Do you want attention or recognition? Are you driven by greed? Or do you want to be a source of healing, service and love that glorifies God?

The enemy is very skillful at fooling us. He makes you think your good intentions are enough – even if mixed with selfish motives.

Seek the presence of God. Invest the time to examine your conscience. Let the Holy Spirit reveal to you where your motives might be impure. Then give up the things that make you a slave to your flesh. Be set free by the purifying work of Christ Jesus.

Prayer for when you have to wait

Sometimes you’re willing to do anything but wait. You want answers and results now. But God’s promises often take time. Why? Because along the way he builds your character. If you get what you want too soon, you might not be ready. Or a disappointing outcome might cause you to react in a harmful way.

During the times of wait, seek to deepen your relationship with Jesus. Be patient and still in his presence. Then no matter what happens – and no matter how long it takes – your life continues to be full of the Spirit and pleasing to God.

Here’s a prayer for when you have to wait…

Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.

John 16:20-22

I remain confident of this:
I will see the goodness of the Lord
in the land of the living.
Wait for the Lord;
    be strong and take heart
    and wait for the Lord.

Prayer to be full of the Holy Spirit

God’s Spirit is the Spirit of truth. He is the giver of life. He reveals to you things you can’t understand on your own. The Holy Spirit makes you want to know Christ better – then your life produces good fruit.

It’s okay to ask for yourself first – to be full of the Spirit. That way God has more presence in your life. He guides your thoughts, actions and prayer. So later, when you face the world, you are nourished and strong.

Our greatest truth is Christ’s resurrection. This keeps us thankful and humble. Ask everyday to be filled with God’s Spirit and live completely in his truth.

If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

Prayer to be more attentive

One of the biggest mistakes we can make is thinking the same help or approach works for everyone. To be truly Christ-like, we have to pay close attention to the signals people send us. Some need a kind word or a hug. Or maybe they need you to wait for them. Others need limits – and some need to repent. Don’t beat them over the head with a Bible though.

Jesus listened and was keenly aware of the needs of others. He knew when it was time to share a meal – and when it was time to deliver the Word. But in all things, the Spirit guided him and was with him.

Be like Jesus. Search the heart. Be filled with the Spirit. Then be God’s instrument that helps bring love and everlasting life to others.

The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying:

“I have loved you with an everlasting love;
I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.”

Jeremiah 31:3

Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. …To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.

Prayer for those struggling with addiction

Seeing a loved one suffer from addiction is incredibly painful. You want to help, but don’t know how – or you feel powerless. Go to God with all your pain, and let him show you the way. There’s never an easy or quick solution. Faith in Christ gives you a clear perspective and the strength to persevere.

You don’t have to face these trials alone. Reach out for help from your church or local support groups. Ask for professional help. Many times God works through others. And keep pounding on heaven’s door, no matter how long it takes. Never give up on the hope of freedom, healing and salvation.

We are praying for you and your loved one too!

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners.

Prayer for bravery

Are you living in isolation or fear? The things of this world are complicated sometimes. We might face situations or people that generate feelings of instability. Or maybe they even hurt us directly. It’s okay to ask God to change things. But don’t forget to ask him to change you too.

Even those who are brave have their fears. A courageous heart is a heart that rests in the Lord. Every day requires courage to face the world. You don’t have to do anything heroic – just take a step forward. Build your trust gradually. Reach out to others for help. Cry out to God to give you strength. Remember your identity as his beloved child.

In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Make Way

Is there any room for real goodness anymore? How do you respond to so much anger, hurt and conflict these days? Many temptations distract us. We want to manipulate and control…  or maybe just give up. Return your focus to what brought you to your knees at one time. At the feet of Jesus you can see the answer clearly.

Prayer to change our hearts

Is your family suffering from turmoil? How do you deal with a complex situation, such as abuse, addiction or neglect? There’s no easy answer, but it’s vitally important to keep your heart in the right place. Also, pray for the hearts of others.

Prayer is not the only answer, but it is a critical part of liberation and healing.  No family is without trials, but many are far from God. How much difference can the healing love of Jesus Christ make? Pray hard, stick with it, and wait upon the Lord.

Start by trusting God. Start by letting him show you where to focus your energy. Then give the rest up to him. Remember, Christ showed us the way is not through control, but through love.
