Prayer for those who wait

It’s so hard to wait sometimes, isn’t it? Even the most patient person can be challenged by having to wait for important things. For example, a health issue might be worrying you. Or maybe you are waiting for someone to change. Financial problems can also make us lose our patience.

A lot of people say we’ve lost the ability to wait in today’s world of instant gratification. That might be partially true, but some have been waiting for a long time for a blessing to arrive.

On our Ask For Prayer board, we receive many requests from people waiting, especially for a change in someone. They face extremely difficult situations of emotional distance, illness or addiction. Many have been waiting for years.

These are powerful testimonies of patience. It doesn’t mean that they have it all figured out. It doesn’t mean that they don’t feel anguish and hurt. They may even doubt God sometimes. But somehow, in the middle of the struggle, they continue to include God in the process. And that’s how miracles operate… through our faith.

Remember the Canaanite woman in Matthew 15? Her daughter was tormented and suffered terribly. The mother cried out to Jesus for mercy, and the disciples tried to shoo her away. She followed them and continued crying out behind them. Even Jesus hesitated, testing her a bit.

The woman came and knelt before him saying, “Lord, help me!” And she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

The passage doesn’t say how long the woman waited, but it may have been for a long time, years even. This is the miracle of patience. It means being faithful to a person (maybe even to yourself).

When we are faithful to someone, we are faithful to God. It’s one of the most powerful expressions of love. And by faith, miracles happen. How or when is beyond our control, but upon our faith, nourished by love, the Lord will deliver.

I waited patiently for the Lord;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the Lord
and put their trust in him.

Prayer for those who wait

O merciful Lord,

My heart & soul suffer, the pain rubbed raw. I’ve waited so long, O Lord.

How much longer?

I am poor and needy. I’m not ashamed to say it. The hurt drives deep. I just want to run away.

Still, a place in my heart remains where love burns fiercely. Against all odds, I stay faithful. I hide myself there. In the wounds of Christ, I wait.

Prepare me, O Lord, for the day when I will sing. I will sing the mercies of God. A new song of joy & victory, as I have waited on the Lord.

In Jesus name,

Amen.
