Prayer for courage to do the right thing

When you face a tough decision, sometimes the right choice is the hard choice. Sometimes it’s much harder. Still, if you compromise your values, it’s never without consequences.

The Christian life is counter-cultural. You might sometimes be seen as odd for doing things “the hard way.” But how much is it worth to sleep well at night knowing you’ve gone the extra mile to do the right thing?

Even if you’ve been making moral compromises for a while, it’s never too late to turn things around. It doesn’t have to happen all at once. Take a step in the right direction. Take a stand. Ask God to back you up. And walk the walk of Christ. It’s the walk that leads to life.

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

Matthew 7:13-14

PRAYER FOR COURAGE TO DO THE RIGHT THING

O heavenly Lord,

I feel like I’m being torn apart. I know what’s right, but it won’t be easy. Not at all. I admit it. I’m afraid. Won’t you help me?

Reveal to me, O Lord, your way. Show me the firm, solid path. It may not be easy, but it’s where Jesus walks. He’s right there next to me. And when the climb gets steep my Lord will lift me. Carry me. For this weak and fragile soul can’t do it alone.

I trust and lean on you. Build my courage to face the day. Let it not fill me with pride, instead may I be humbled knowing that in some small way I imitate Christ.

My Lord Jesus held nothing back as it was all for love. May I too go to the cross, be driven by love, and give glory to God.

In Jesus name I pray,

Amen.

  1. Dear God I want to thank you for being there and getting me through the turmoil of my divorce. I have made a lot of stupid choices in the past 3 years and I want to do better. You know the situations I’m in…and you know how tormented I am. Please help reveal everything I need to know before making this painful decision I am soon going to be forced to make. Please guide me and give me courage to do the right thing..and to bare the consequences. Amen.

    • Dear DJ,

You are definitely on the right track. When we ask God to help us take responsibility — no matter how hard it is — he also sets us free.

I will be supporting you in prayer. The Lord’s peace and strength to you!

      Vincent
