Have you become unbearably strict? With yourself? With others? Sadly, this can occur in many Christians since they want to improve their lives. The problem is when we try to do this all on our own.
What happens when we exclude God from the process? We exclude love.
Check how high you set the performance bar. Also, take note of your attitude when trying to improve something. Are your expectations unrealistic? Are you forgetting about the hearts involved?
The Pharisees were not bad people, or at least not any worse than the average person. Their problem was that they thought by their efforts alone, they could please God. So they ended up crucifying Christ. Meanwhile, our heavenly Father sent his Son to show us the true way to commune with God.
It’s not about control, but about complete trust in the Lord and his will. This doesn’t mean inaction. Instead, it’s action and attitude guided by the Spirit. Yes, we all have to do our part, but give God room to do his good work. Rest upon his promises.

Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”
Matthew 9:13
Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7
PRAYER TO NOT BE SO DEMANDING (regular text)
Oh loving Lord,
I’m so tied up in knots. I want to be responsible and do the right thing. Am I overdoing it?
Free me from thinking it all depends on me. Soften my heart, oh Lord, towards others and myself. Help me to accept imperfection. Let me be patient and kind.
Yes, there is work to be done and limits to respect. But let it be done from a heart that loves instead of one that demands. Show me how, oh Lord. I can’t do this on my own, But you can, so I go to you.
Show me the way. Change my heart and mind to understand that mercy wins over sacrifice. And love suffers all things for the glory of Christ.
In Jesus name,
Amen.
